The bridge
If you are receiving this newsletter, then you must love animals! I'm one of you. I have been a foster parent for over 7 years.
I am writing this article to ask you all, as animal lovers, to please consider fostering a homeless, abandoned Newfoundland. It's the backbone of the rescue and sometimes the only way to help these precious lives.
All of our pets for adoption are in foster homes, but the problem is there are not enough foster parents to continue saving all the animals in need.
Right now over 500 newsletters are sent out every quarter. Of those only a very small percentage are foster families. Can you imagine if all 500 people spoke to their friends about the importance of fostering? Can we tell our friends how easy it can be, how rewarding it can be, and that they would be saving a life? Sure we can! Now all of the sudden, thousands of people know about the importance of fostering just by sharing with your friends!
We often hear, "I can't do it, I would get too attached". If you could just feel how rewarding it is to care for an animal and know you found it the perfect forever home. It truly is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.
As I type this, I am watching my foster dog sleep on a soft bed with a full belly. Might be the first time he has felt so safe and content. I will love him like he's one of my own, then when the perfect home comes along I will kiss him goodbye. There's another dog waiting for me.
Yes, we are there to give them the gift of life because their life matters to us. As I take them from the shelter I whisper, "hold your head up high and don't look back, because from this moment forward you will never be alone, unwanted, or unloved again". They pause for a second, wag their tail, and look up at us as if to ask "who are you"? We smile, kiss their nose, and tell them " We are a High Country Newfoundland foster parent". They finally relax and sigh. Once in the car they lean forward and smother you with we kisses. I hug them tenderly and whisper "you aer so very welcome" Yes my 500 friends, that is what rescue truly is all about.

A Poem to my Foster Dog
by Diane Morgan
I am the bridge
between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.
I am made of mush,
because my heart melted when I saw you,
matted and sore, limping, depressed,
lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.
For one little time you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand
I will love you with my whole heart
I will make you whole.
I am made of steel,
because when the time comes,
when you are well and sleek,
when your eyes shine, and your tail wags with joy
then comes the hard part.
I will let you go not without a tear,
but without a regret.
For you are safe forever
A new dog needs me now.
